Force Science News #172: Anti-fatigue measures could cut cop deaths 15%, researcher claims

Training note: Congratulations to the 58 graduates of the most recent Force Science Certification Course held in San Jose, CA! We’re proud to welcome this outstanding group, representing 36 agencies from 13 states and 3 provinces, to the growing ranks of Certified Force Science Analysts worldwide. It’s comments like those shared after the class by Det. Kelly Rizzo with the Niagara Falls (NY) PD that continue to motivate and inspire us. “In 16 years of attending law enforcement training courses, including the FBI National Academy, the Force Science Certification Course has been by far the best training I have had the privilege of receiving,” he wrote. “The pedigree of the instructors is outstanding. These aren’t just individuals teaching about someone else’s information and findings. They’re the experts who are actually the source of the information! It’s like taking a course on World War II and having Winston Churchill teach it!” Humbling praise that’s not taken lightly. Click here for FSI Certification Course information and dates.

Force Science News #170: The LAPD consent-decree mess; more of the same ahead for other agencies as DOJ ramps up a campaign against police, author warns

An award-winning journalist who frequently writes on law enforcement issues has given a scathing account of the federal government’s 10-year oversight of the LAPD and calls it “a disturbing harbinger for other police departments.”

In a 3,100-word report in The Weekly Standard magazine, author and TV commentator Heather Mac Donald paints a damning picture of life for an agency under a so-called “consent decree” that allows outside forces to tightly regulate day-to-day policing activities.

In Los Angeles, she alleges, this absentee management has been “a power grab from day one,” resulting in, among other abuses: Read the rest of this entry »

I. New position paper links cognitive interviewing to “fair, objective” OIS investigations

An unusual collaboration between a former police psychologist, a senior deputy city attorney, and an internationally known researcher has resulted in a new position paper that strongly encourages agencies to use the special techniques of “cognitive interviewing” when taking statements from officers who survive shootings.
