Course Overview

In recent years, security professionals have faced growing scrutiny from the media and community organizations regarding their approach to addressing issues and individuals with challenges in our society. There is a strong public call for the consistent use of “de-escalation” techniques, even in situations where such tactics may not be feasible. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of technology has led to an increase in video-recorded interactions with individuals. As technological advancements continue, it becomes crucial for security personnel to enhance their training and interactions with the public.

Our discussion focuses on the often-complex expectations placed on security personnel to achieve compliance without resorting to physical force and how this may not always be practical or safe. Recognizing that the primary objective of de-escalation tactics is to resolve issues with minimal harm is essential.

This de-escalation training course introduces concepts and strategies to facilitate de-escalation efforts when personal connections can be established. Participants will gain the knowledge required to address the needs of individuals experiencing mental health crises or altered perceptions of reality. The course aims to improve officers’ abilities to manage individuals by developing skills to establish contact, build rapport, and gain influence in order to achieve appropriate security outcomes.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define de-escalation and identify its objectives, as well as situations where de-escalation can and cannot be considered.
  • Discuss the tactical principles of de-escalation, including risk assessment and decision-making.
  • Evaluate an interaction quickly to determine whether de-escalation efforts are reasonable, tactically practical, and likely to be successful.
  • Apply critical Force Science concepts, such as the “Response-ability Zone” and the “7 T’s De-escalation Evaluation Model,” to evaluate tactics that support the de-escalation process.
  • Apply effective principles of persuasion and rapport-building to connect with difficult subjects, including those who are mentally ill, using the ‘Behavioral Influence Stairway Model.’
  • Use specialized questions designed to engage individuals in crisis and increase the likelihood of resolution without the use of force or with minimal force.
  • Develop approaches and control strategies that maximize response options while minimizing potential emotional and physical escalation.
  • Balance the desirability of peacefully resolving a conflict with the need to maintain officer and citizen safety.
  • Apply principles of officer self-regulation and emotional control to maintain rational thinking processes.
  • Recognize and avoid common barriers to effective communication that officers may unintentionally employ.
  • Employ effective strategies when proper de-escalation attempts are not successful.
  • Explain the challenges of realistic de-escalation to community members and the media, particularly regarding the inhibiting factors that may prohibit an officer's ability to safely de-escalate.
