Force Science Encourages Survey Participation: What Skills are Required for Leadership in Public Safety?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Washington State University (WSU), in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST), is working to identify a comprehensive set of critical skills required for leadership in the public safety sector. This survey is for Law Enforcement, Corrections, Parole & Probation, Fire, EMS, and Telecommunications/Dispatch.

Force Science encourages public safety personnel at all levels to participate in this Public Safety Leadership survey. The purpose of the survey is to help the researchers to understand what makes a successful Public Safety Leader.

You are encouraged to NOT spend more than 90 minutes on this survey, and you are not required to complete all statements.

In the survey, you will be asked several key demographic questions but you are not asked to identify yourself.

You will be given lists of “performance” and “difficulty” statements.

You will be asked to rate the “performance” statements for how critical a skill is for Public Safety Leadership. You will then be asked to consider the criticality of that skill during routine operations and then during a time of crisis.

You will also be asked to rate the difficulty statements for how much more difficult you think they make it for Public Safety professionals to succeed in a leadership role, and for how frequently you think they occur.

Researchers have assured us that everything you communicate in the survey will be maintained in the strictest confidence and that any personal identifiers inadvertently collected will be deleted so that all your input becomes permanently anonymous.
